Nagarjuna Besha of the Lords

Lord Jagannath is much more than a deity. He is a way of life, an emotion, a feeling that binds all of us. He is a friend, a guide, sacred and hence lovingly addressed by different names.

We derive strength just by seeing the eyes, the two big black dots circled by a white outer ring.He is an integral part of our lives. In Odisha people lovingly refer to Him as if he a family member.

Nagarjuna Besha — the auspicious day will be observed after 25 years on 12th day of the holy month of Kartik, i.e., today, on November 27, 2020. The last Nagarjuna Besha of the Lords was held in 1994. Earlier, the rare Besha of the lords was held in 1966 and 1983.

This year, devotees cannot witness the Lords in the rare attire due to the prevailing situation.

As the Panchuka during Kartik month will be observed for six days this year instead of five days(25th Nov to 30th Nov 2020), Lord Jagannath along with his siblings Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra will appear in Nagarjuna Besha (a military general) on the additional day.

This besha is also known as the Parasurama besha. According to Hindu mythology, Nagarjuna Besha is observed in commemoration of the killing of Kartyavera Arjuna, by Parsuram, the warrior incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

In local Odia language ‘Besha’ or ‘Vesha’ means ‘Costume’ or ‘Dress’ or ‘Make Up’. It is a common feature with all the temples that deities are dressed and decorated daily. On special occasions the deities are also dressed and decorated in suitable manner. The same is also the case with the deities in the Puri temple.

On this occasion, the deities are dressed like warriors. As per custom, Lord Jagannatha and Lord Balabhadra are decorated with several weapons including arrows, bows, Hala (plough), Chakra (wheel) and Musala (mace) during Nagarjuna Besha. The deities are adorned with ornaments and weapons made of Gold.

Besha silpis (artisans) are engaged before time in designing the special costumes of the deities. Both weavers and artisans of Odisha have their special role in adorning Lord Jagannatha.

Praying before The Almighty on this auspicious day to keep all of us in good health and give strength to overcome this pandemic.🙏🙏

Jay Jagannath Mahaprabhu.🙏🌺🌼🏵️
